Written: [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic Harry Potter, Lily/James + Sirius + baby Harry, Predictably, Sirius threw the first snowball. Lily threw the second.

Predictably enough, Sirius threw the first snowball.

“Don’t you dare, Black,” Lily had warned, one finger held up threateningly and Harry pulled closer to her for protection (not that he cared one way or the other except to make a face when he tasted the fur-line of her hood and found it not to his liking). “If you hit the baby, you will regret it.”

That didn’t stopped Sirius from kneeling down by the freshly fallen snow with that all-too familiar glint in his eyes. He didn’t even pause in scooping up the snow.

“I will hunt you down,” Lily threatened, but Sirius just continued to form the snowball. “I will… tell your mother.” He rolled his eyes at that threat. “I will tell James’ mother!”

“Hey, why am I a part of this?” James squawked even though he was still grinning like a loon at the scene in front of him.

“You know why,” Lily snapped. “If you hadn’t made friends with this idiot back on the train to Hogwarts, I wouldn’t be standing here now trying to reason with a mad man.”

“I’m not sure you’re allowed to play that card more than once in a day, Lil,” James said.

“And you already used it this morning when I tried to make tea.” Sirius was always quick to back James up.

“You mean when you tried to enchant the teapot to fly around the room and breathe steam like a dragon. I keep telling you that Harry is too young for these gestures.”

“I’m not sure you’re allowed to use Harry as an excuse every time instead of blaming me for meeting Padfoot in the first place,” James said, ever the traitor.

Lily had slowly sidled over until it would be easy to duck behind a tree if it weren’t for the fact that she still had Harry in her arms and she didn’t like going into warfare with him. “I’m serious, Sirius,” she said, wincing when she realized the unfortunate wording, “if you hit Harry with a snowball, I’ll… I’ll… I’ll take back godfather privileges!”

That actually caused Sirius to stop. He’d already wound his arm in a dramatically slow motion and it looked comical (and a little awkward) the way he let it hang slightly behind his head.

“You wouldn’t!” he accused.

“Lily,” James said a little nervously, “didn’t you hear what I just said? You can’t just keep using threats like that, you’ll lose all your credibility, and it’s just a snowball…”

But Lily wasn’t going to back down, not now that she’d finally found something that might work to temper Sirius’ jocular nature.

“Try me,” she said, holding her ground.

It was a monumental occasion: the first time Sirius Black ever backed down from a dare. Lily didn’t think she would ever forget her feeling of triumph, nor the look on James’ face when Sirius threw the snowball at him instead (he wasn’t about to let it go to waste).

James sputtered and scrambled to assemble an arsenal of his own while Sirius dove behind the hedge to better defend himself. Lily meanwhile, knowing the propensity those two had of getting things out of hand, whipped up a makeshift baby seat for Harry out of the snow and set some wards up to shelter him from the line of fire. Then she used her wand to dump a treeful of snow on both of the boys, who were too busy watching out for the other one to guard themselves from her.

She got a full peel of laughter in before either of them had gathered their wits enough to retaliate, and then the war was on.
