That the kiss felt wrong had surprisingly little to do with the fact that Logan was a girl, and Veronica Liked Boys.

She started to push her away, to break up the kiss, but forgot about one of the biggest ways girls differed from boys, hands pressing against Logan's breasts instead of her chest.

Logan took that as encouragement, moving to lightly fondle one of Veronica's breasts.

"Wait," Veronica said, and Logan stopped, although her mouth was still close enough that Veronica could feel her breath on her lips. Logan's hand moved, but only to rub a small circle over top Veronica's shirt.

"Logan," Veronica said, trying not to look at Logan's face right then. Even out of the corner of her eye, Veronica could tell Logan was staring at her too intensely. It wasn't the hatred that Veronica had just about gotten used to over the last year, or the fondness from their time before that. It wasn't even the jealousy Logan had tried so hard to hide, back when she thought she had something to be jealous of.

Veronica didn't want to name the expression she saw, not even in her head.

"We shouldn't," she said, moving her hands to the crooks of Logan's arms to hold her away.

"Why not?" Logan asked, only letting her arms get swept back and still standing close, too close, to Veronica.

Veronica could think of a million reasons to give, but she only whispered one. "I like guys. I'm sorry."

"So did Lilly."

Just like that, Logan evoked the real reason for Veronica's feelings of wrongness.

It wasn't that the idea of kissing another girl disgusted her. It was different, yes, but she didn't feel as uncomfortable now that it was happening to her as she had back when she was forced to watch Logan and Lilly make out in front of her. It wasn't even that Logan had spent the better part of the last year making Veronica's life a living hell, shunning and spreading rumours, greeting Veronica with a sharp tongue and sharper nails when their paths did cross, though really that should have been her first objection. They used to be friends, once, but all that had changed when Lilly had died, and now Logan was casually bringing her name up in conversation.

"Lilly..." Veronica started, but stopped. What could she say about her best friend, Logan's sometimes girlfriend? She couldn't console, like she had back when Lilly was still alive. Couldn't tell Logan that it was alright, that the boys Lilly flirted with didn't matter, not when she now had proof otherwise.

Logan laughed now. "Lilly loved guys. I loved Lilly and Lilly loved guys."

"Logan..." Veronica tried again. Her head was spinning and she couldn't find the right words tonight; she wished she could blame Logan's presence and Logan's kiss for that.

"Celeste would have hated her daughter going out with someone like Weevil almost as much as she hated her daughter being a dyke. Do you think--?"

Logan paused, licking the lips that were still puffy from kissing Veronica. She waited, her heart beating rapidly. She tried to blame it on Logan's line of questioning and not Logan herself.

"Do you think that she loved Weevil?"

Veronica wondered how long Logan had wanted to ask that question.

"She loved you," Veronica said emphatically, a little surprised at herself. The words still came out as believable as they once had, back before she knew there were secrets that Lilly kept even from her best friend, back before Lilly died. She was a little surprised to learn that she still believed the words now, even after everything.

"She loved you, too," Logan said. "Lilly was full of love."

"Not the way she loved you," said Veronica. She wondered if she'd ever been able to convince Logan, even when she'd been certain herself.

"This isn't about Lilly," Logan promised her.

She brushed the back of her hand across her cheek before leaning in and pressing her lips against Veronica's mouth, sucking her upper lip just slightly until Veronica opened her mouth enough to let Logan's tongue in.

Veronica let herself be kissed.

She wished she could let herself believe Logan's words, too.
