Others—most vocally Derek—wondered why Connor had given him the picture. Even the envious ones thought it strange. Kyle could see that, in the slight crinkle around their eyes when they learned the girl wasn't his sweetheart. Not a memory from before, a dead woman, mother to their saviour.
But Kyle never wondered. That Connor handed over the picture their first meeting after that attempted kiss wasn't lost on Kyle. He got the message and, good soldier that he was, attempted to obey orders. Soon, he found it just as easy to love the mother he did the son.
