It was the oldest trick in the book.

Max knew better than to protest when Alec suddenly swept her against the wall, tangling his left hand in her hair while letting the right rest splayed against her ribs. She even leaned into the kiss, all the while wondering why this ruse still worked. Even the rent-a-cop security working this party should know better than to be lulled into complacency just because they saw her and Alec making out. Especially since, in addition to protecting Seattle's richest and therefore best, they were also guarding a study that contained, if Logan was right, enough evidence of the host's wheelings and dealings to land him in jail even in the rampantly corrupt Seattle.

Then again, she and Alec hadn't been the first—or even the fifth—couple to sneak away from the party.

The kiss deepened and she clasped her hand over his, hoping any observers wouldn't realize her tight grip was to keep his thumb from creeping up any further. Half an inch more and she might have to punch him.

Though the physical violence might have to wait until later, when they were safely away from the party. The guards were being too quiet; they had to be a little more professional than she originally thought. She expected them to have broken up the kiss by now, shooing her and Alec back to parts of the house that weren't off-limits. The guards must be suspicious. If she broke character now, they would notice.

As if he recognized that thought, Alec was using his tongue now. Max continued to play along, but he was going to pay for that when they got out of there.

She heard the footsteps in the distance.

They were getting closer.

Alec pulled back from the kiss, looking her in the eye. "Busted," he said, wincing.

It was a split second before she realized he was worried because she had caught him, not the guards. The guards that were only now arriving on the scene, that hadn't been there when he first kissed her. In that split second, he ducked out of her embrace and hurried down the hall, slipping into the office before any of the real guards could spot them.

She rushed after him, vowing that guards or no, she was going to kick his ass.
