"Give it 'ere," Ragetti shouted.

"NO!" William shrieked, holding on with considerable tenacity for a tot who wasn't always able to stand steady on his own two feet, on land or on water.

"What is going on!" Elizabeth barked, using her pirate captain voice instead of her stern mother voice, briskly walking towards the fight.

Ragetti let go. "I saws it first," he claimed. "It's mine, right and fair. Your brat stole it from me. Make him give it back!"

William didn't hide behind his mother's legs or wait for her rescue, but stood his ground, clutching his prize harder now that he was no longer engaged in a tug-of-war.

"Oh for the love of..." Elizabeth trailed off. Not for the first time, she wondered why she had once believed that the pirate's life was filled with excitement and adventure, when it really involved settling childish spats and soothing the wounded egos of men who didn't have the sense God gave them.

"It's a stuffed toy bear. Let William have it."

"It's not fair," Ragetti sniffed. "Just 'cuz William's the baby, doesn't mean he gets his way all the time."

"I'm not a baby," William shouted, holding the toy to him even more tightly.

"He's not a baby," Elizabeth agreed even though it pained her to say that about her very young son. "But he is a member of the crew, which means he gets a share of the spoil. So unless you want to give him your share of the gold..."

The threat hung there.

Ragetti actually considered the trade. Elizabeth actually considered smacking him. Finally, he conceded, still scowling.

Elizabeth sighed and picked up her son, who proudly showed off his treasure.

"William, sometimes I think you're the most grown up of all of them on this ship!"
